I’ll Never Let You Go

I was busy packing
My metaphorical bags
When he said
I’ll never let you go.

I turned, stopped
Really? Never?

That’s just the way it is.

I didn’t want him to let me go.

I just didn’t think I was worth keeping.

And no one had ever said that to me before.

I leave.
It’s what I do.

I have a reputation
As a Gypsy,
An Adventuress,
A blithe Free Spirit

I was on the phone
Looking out the window
At another wet English day
He was an ocean away

I started to argue with him
Because that’s what I do

But I wanted so badly
To be wanted by him

I had fallen hard
Loved him hard

I wasn’t a Free Spirit at all

I just couldn’t bear to be left
