Play Me

He who walks out of step hears another drum.” ― Ken Kesey

My entire
being
Is alert

listening
For the sound

Of distant
drumming

Even you
Who say
we are
So very
solid

Watch
Wait

for me
to find
my step
again

But
everyone knows

I am
teetering
On
the edge

Of my
own abyss

There are

No
lifelines left
for me

My own
internal
balance
is just
out
of reach

Listening
for
the right beat
for
a remnant
of a song
for
the player
to sit down
and
play me
like
a forgotten
soft
melody
